September: US, Natural History Magazine: Climbing to Heaven: Global warming is pushing animals and plants to record altitudes. The highest known ecosystem on earth is located at almost 20,000 ft in the South American Andes, and you are overwhelmed by the diversity of species at altitudes between 13,000 ft and 18,000 ft: you find frogs, reptiles, tarantulas, scorpions, and cushion plants, which are up to 3000 years old. Even trees create scattererd forests at record altitudes there. |
